A Knight's Challenge

After days of looking for allies the Bretonnian seemed flustered by the sudden rush of volunteers. His eyes seemed unable to focus and he stared at the three like a deer caught in the open. It wasn't until Paelic cleared his throat in a threatening manner that the noble appeared to regain his senses.

"Perfect my friends. A group of our size and valor will easily be able to dispatch the foul Black Knight and his monstrous comrades..." he hesitated in his speech for a moment as he noticed Paelic's hands still gripping his collar.

"Errr, yes. Perhaps we should continue our conversation outside of town. We have a ways to go and daylight is always in short supply," he said, nervously removing Paelic's hands.

"Excellent let us be off. Now!" Paelic said softly grabbing the bretonian and almost dragging him through the street, nervously glancing behind himself frequently. It was only a couple of minutes before they reached the front gate. "Samuel, Krake! Open the gate! It's urgent."

"Sure thing Paelic." The two guardsmen scrambled to open the gate. Krake walked up to Paelic as Samuel began pulling the level. "By the way, word on the street is there are some ogre's looking for you. Can't tell if they are happy or mad though."

"Angry. Definitely angry. If anyone asks I'm hanging out at the docks. "Look for the uh... what should I tell them?" The man gave a shrug. "Tell them I'm staying a wizards house, some kind of evil dark wizard... thing. Anything that looks evil and has magic. The more you change the story the more they'll be confused. Tell em I'm under the protection of witches, warlocks, or hell even chaos wizards and vampires, That either will throw them off my trail long enough to lay low, or scare them out of following me. Spread the word for me will ya?"

Krake gave a knowing nod. "Absolutely sir, we owe you one for taking on that ogre at the Musty Mug."

Paelic put his hand on the guards shoulder and nodded turning to his companions. "Alright excellent. So we're at the city gate. Where are we going and what were you selling?" He said pulling out his coin purse flashing a bloody grin.

"Haha! My friend, there will be no need for your money where we are going," the Bretonnian said with a gleam in his eye. "Lives will be bought and sold by our skill with lance and blade." Suddenly the knight whistled sharply and a warhorse in full armored barding trotted out of the forest. My compatriots," the noble said as he turned to face the diverse group, "may I introduce you to Eldred, the mightiest steed outside fair Bretonnia." The noble's face beamed as he displayed his steed. Clad in it's armored trappings the horse seemed almost something out of a legend. Its large powerful frame was perfectly enclosed in the gleaming armor, and one could tell even as it stood awaiting its master's command that it was fast and intelligent. This was not a horse that would panic in battle, and when compared to its rather shabby looking master it seemed that the horse would be the better warrior.

With surprising agility the armored knight mounted his steed, donned his battered helmet, and took up the worn-out lance that had been secured to the horse. "Now, let us go and seek the Black Knight. His territory is quite far away and it would not do for us to reach him at night when his dark powers are at their strongest."

"Lead the way then good knight. However you might wish to not go at full gallop as there are those of that are injured" He said grinning, "or have small stunty legs."

The knight looked at Paelic with astonishment. "I would never- I can't imagine a knight leaving his allies behind good sir. Eldred is here not for my own comfort, but so that I may battle the Dark knight on equal footing," the Bretonnian said patting the horse's flank. "It is said that the Dark Knight rides a nightmare beast made from the terrible monstrosities that children dream up. Of course, that's nothing that Eldred and I can't handle, hopefully..." The knight trailed off and stared off into the forest.
