Thunder flashed in the skies overhead, silhouetting the combat field for a split second before it fell once more into darkness. In that split second the heroes battling valiantly against the monster known as Lord Shadowfang and his ghoullish minions were given a glimpse of their dreadful opponent, his wings extended and displayed in a monstrous gloat as a handful of ravenous ghouls stalked the trees just beyond the small clearing. Leaning on a single knee against the rock formation that he stood on and clad in armor of midnight, his arms and massive talons hanging listlessly at his sides.

"What did you hope to accomplish here?" Laughed Shadowfang as his voice echoed through the rain. "Perhaps to make names for yourselves by defeating the mighty Lord Shadowfang? How dare you!"

Snapping his hand to the sky in a single swift motion, the Strigoi Vampire gathered his power to him and he could feel the rush of the winds of magic swirling about him as he reached into his heart and drew forth the innate unholy power of his Vampiric blood. At his call the bodies of already felled heroes stirred once more and rose to their feet, shambling and moaning hideously. The sounds of resumed battle rang out with the storm as the fallen hunters viciously began to assail their former comrades and friends.

"You have forfeited your lives to me for this insult, low-bloods." Murmured Shadowfang as he leaped down from his perch, rushing forward and smashing one of the distracted hunters to the ground with a shoulder charge. "Die with dignity at the very least, after all you stand before your new king now..."

In ages past, Lord Valmir Weissberg would never have hidden from the sun behind the hood of a cloak but in this new life that he led he found himself repulsed by the sunlight. He had only recently awoken from his healing slumber after having been defeated by a band of particularly powerful Sigmarite priests. They had evidently heard the rumors that a powerful Vampire of the Strigoi lineage had taken residence and claimed lordship over the forest where he had staked his claim and come to smoke him out. And that they did, though not as well as they had supposed. They had defeated Shadowfang soundly, that much was true. However they had failed to destroy him for good... a common mistake made by humans when fighting the undead. So it was that Valmir had escaped destruction with his un-life, though his power was shattered and his magic lost to him. Where he had once been a frighteningly powerful necromancer, as were many of his kind intuitively, and a vicious warrior-- he found so many things in the world around him to be a threat now. It was an unsettling thought and experience, he decided, that so many things should be able to destroy him for good in his weakened state.

Clenching his fist in a bout of frustration at his puny state, the Strigoi noble loosed a single slashing punch at a near-by tree which splintered the trunk and sent pieces of shattered wood in every which way. This brought a sharkish grin to Valmir's face as he looked down at his unarmed hand. He was regaining his strength every day that he spent awake. The slumber had caused him to lose a massive amount of his former glory but his daily experiments into his growing strength and magical prowess proved that it was returning to him of it's own accord. How much of it would return on it's own he did not know but for the moment he was content to let his body regenerate what it could. In time if he found his natural powers not returning he would find a way to restore them but for the time being it was enough that he was growing more powerful by the day. After all, time was not a pressing matter for him who's years had been frozen in his mid thirties as a mortal in ages past.

Lifting his eyes from the decimated tree trunk to the sky, Valmir could not help but let a snarl curl on his lips at the glare of the sun. Reaching up to his hood, the Vampire pulled back the cloth protection and exposed his skin to the warmth of the sun. Though not cripplingly painful, and certainly not lethal as many legends would suggest of it, Valmir could not help but find the sunlight agonizing just the same. He could move and operate in the sunlight just as any normal mortal could, a little pain was nothing to Shadowfang, but he certainly did not enjoy the experience. He did not know how long he stood in the sun that afternoon and evening but it was long since dark before the vampire moved once more. It was an exercise that he had taken to performing on a regular basis to increase his tolerance to the frustrating rays of the fiery orb overhead.

Turning and throwing the cape-hood combination mantle from his shoulders and letting his hunting instincts take over in the glow of the moon, Valmir smiled a fanged grin as his features contorted and transformed into his true state. From his back exploded out a pair of large wings that he had recently regenerated. They were still vestigial at best for they were not powerful enough yet to take him into the air but it was good to have them back just the same. His body's balance had been off without them. Stretching his transformed talons and extending his wings into the air, Shadowfang took a deep breath of the swamp air and let it out his nose slowly. The bog smelled terrible but he could smell the warm blood of literally teeming world around him and that only served to reinforce the almost manic grin on the vampire's face. It was good to be back in the world!

Digging his razor-sharp claws into the flesh of the ungor as he lifted the eviscerated top-half of it's corpse into the air, Shadowfang considered for a moment drinking of the creature but then thought better of it with a glance to his companions. They knew now, or could at least guess at, that he was a vampire or some other fel creature thought he might be able to pass himself off as a Wolf Priest if he chose to do so. Regardless if they could diagnose his true nature with any accuracy, it mattered little in the long run. They were a man largely regarded as insane, a Chaos mage, a lizardman, and a dwarf with a reputation for getting piss drunk (not that all of his stinking folk didn't have that reputation). No one would believe that Mr. Weissberg, an individual who'd spent a great deal of his time in the area inuring himself to the peacekeepers and merchants that kept the towns afloat and safe, was a murderous monster in disguise. And even if they did, thought Valmir with a mental chuckle, he was no different then the other bloodthirsty monsters in disguise that he co-existed here in Irolek with.

Suddenly releasing his grip on the slowly cooling flesh of the ungor body, Weissberg let it fall to the ground with a sickening crunch and then turned away from it to fight the hunger that he felt in the back of his mind and in his heart. In doing so, he caught for a moment the gaze of Teheboq straying in his direction and in that moment Valmir saw something that he recognized as apprehension. He wondered just what the Saurus knew about the undead and vampires specifically, for the lizardman certainly seemed to recognize Valmir for what he was. The look in his eyes could say nothing else. Grinning widely, Valmir gave the lizardman a curt nod and turned away. He knew the Chaos mage would care little for his true identity-- Chaos mages feared nothing. They, not unlike the Vampires, viewed the world around them from a pedestal of superiority though most of them lacked the practicality to know when to fold their cards and when to hold them. The dwarf Valmir cared nothing for. Dwarves were disgusting offal and he would have little to no contact with the little beast if he could avoid it. Feeling the pull of his hunger once more, Valmir spared the dwarf one last thought-- a predatory one.

As the syllables and phrases of the lore of magic known as Necromancy rolled off of Valmir's lips, he could feel his magic slipping away from him. Attempting to animate the body of the creature that the Dragon Ogre had just killed had been his first thought but as he failed to weave the winds into a complete spell, he could only feel the sting of memory at the loss he had suffered. There had been a time where legions would have answered his call. From miles around the dead would rise, take arms, and march to his summons. But that day was long gone and now he could not animate but a single zombie. Concentrating harder in practice to control what was left of the magic, Valmir could feel something similar to a spell form but then it was gone just as soon as it had been created. With a resigned grunt, Valmir flexed his claws and prepared himself to do battle with the dangerous minion of Chaos up front and personal...

As the group moved through the thick jungle brush, Valmir recalled his attempt to utilize his magic during the battle with the diseased dragon ogre. He'd failed so easily with no real sign of success which meant that he'd lost quite a bit more power then he originally believed. He still had some of his physical power but his magical abilities were almost all but gone. He could scarcely remember the words to the Invocation of Nagash, much less any of the other various spells he'd once had in his arsenal. Valmir was no mage or wizard, but he'd been powerful none the less. Looking up from the ground where his gaze had fallen while he'd been locked in thought, the vampire could see that the group was stopping at an obelisk but he didn't care much. He'd kill whatever needed to be dead to cease the threat to the hovels he'd decided to hide amongst and then be on his merry way... hopefully to find a way to restore his power to it's fullest.

"Your speed means nothing if it is death you are running from, my friend." Whispered the voice of Valmir's enemy as he hid himself behind the trunk of a massive tree, wincing at the pain that wracked his body still. He'd survived his encounter with the plague priests but only just. He'd hoped that he would not have to take up arms against another enemy soon but sadly fate had other plans. Almost a day hence he had encountered a mysterious High Elf while out hunting and attempted to feed on him. Unfortunately for the Strigoi, the elf turned out to be much more then he'd expected. He was not simply a traveler; he was a powerful wizard. Valmir had been swiftly driven off by the powerful magic that the wizard possessed for in his weakened state from not only his re-awakening but the priest's afflictions on his body Shadowfang was little match for the elf's power. Now he fled for his life from it, though it seemed no matter how far he fled his pursuer held his pace. "And assuredly it is death itself that chases you."

Risking a glance to the small clearing that he'd just passed through, Valmir eyed the wizard who stalked him. The elf wore a voluminous sea-dragon cloak about his form and strode not simply casually but confidently. He held no fear of the vampire he chased and indeed seemed even jovial about the encounter. With a flash of fire and light, the elf lashed out at the tree where Valmir had been hiding with a blazing bolt of immense magic which splintered the trunk in question and sent the Strigoi sprawling from where he'd been. He hadn't even seen the elf move; much less cast anything. Attempting to get to his feet and find a new refuge, Valmir's head spun and he stumbled to the ground once before finally righting himself... though he now found himself face to face with the wizard that pursued him. Scything forward with his transformed claws, Valmir found himself immediately overmatched against a gleaming silver blade that sprang forth from the depths of the wizard's cloak and batted away Valmir's talons.

"I appreciate your need to feed, Strigoi." Whispered the elf through the cloth that covered his face, his voice even and would be almost friendly if not for the deathly sharp blade separating them. Thinking quickly, Valmir took a step back and allowed the elf his space though he kept his guard up. Few knew enough about vampires to name a Strigoi from simply seeing them, such a fact unnerved Valmir even more then the wizard's apparent power and skill. "But you must understand that I cannot have you stirring up trouble with the townsfolk. It is too dangerous."

"Dangerous? For whom?" Murmured Valmir, his guard still as keen as he could hold it through his wavering concentration. He was honestly curious at this point-- his curiosity overcoming his apprehension towards standing toe to toe against one as skilled as this individual in his weakened state.

"I have told you too much already, my friend." Was all the elf said in response and in a flash of silver light it was over, the bright sword impaled directly through Valmir's chest as he slumped forward on it. Again he hadn't even seen the elf move... and yet here he was. Raising his hand, a powerful glow of necromantic magic gathered about the elf's fingertips and in that moment Valmir's eyes opened wide in realization. He had run afoul of another vampire. That was the last thought that the Lord Shadowfang had before his foe's spell ended his life, causing his body to crumble to ash and dust on the blade of the elf's sword. Turning away from where he'd killed Valmir, Maelkur glanced over his shoulder once with his golden eyes dancing with disappointment at having to slay another vampire.

He had no personal hatred for the Strigoi, he might have even been a useful servant. But the Strigoi were simply too dangerous to control, he knew. He also knew that the presence of another vampire would only stir up suspicion, and that was the last thing he wanted. He did not wish his secret known just yet. Turning to leave, Maelkur stopped short of taking a step as he felt a last wash of power from where Valmir's belongings had fallen and as he turned to inspect it his eyes fell on a small token which radiated power which appeared to be the shrunken head of a Dragon Ogre. Raising an eyebrow, Maelkur recovered the piece and claimed the fallen's coin purse before stowing them deep within his cloak before departing... his body melting into shadow and disappearing without a trace.
